In his final film, Robert Bresson stages money as a quasi-religious principle. Following the false accusation of young Yvon Targe—simple heating oil delivery man, husband, and father—for circulating counterfeit money, a sequence of events unfolds according to a transcendental logic: A downward spiral governed less by intention than by necessity, a law of equivalence in which economic abstraction is directly converted into violence.
